This service has been highly used with over 600 members and retired members taking advantage and taking steps to safeguard their families.  Indeed, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

The Catholic Police Guild

The Catholic Police Guild

The Catholic Police Guild was formed in 1914 and as such can lay claim to be the oldest staff support network in the police service.  Membership is open to both serving and retired police officers and staff.  The first Mass was celebrated on the 11 June 1914 and the Guild itself was formed on the same day.  Since that date the Guild has always had the honour of having the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster as its Patron.

Each year, in November, the Guild hosts a Requiem Mass for all those police officers and staff who have died in the previous 12 months.  This is celebrated in Westminster Cathedral and the chief concelebrant is always the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster.

The aims and objectives of the Catholic Police Guild are:-

  • To provide a fraternal organisation through which members may be encouraged and obtain a better understanding of their Catholic faith and its relevance to the police service vocation.
  • To help members to apply Christian principles in the performance of their duties by helping others, resisting temptations to injustice and disloyalty, demonstrating qualities of integrity, sincerity and truthfulness and performing other charitable good works.
  • All Members are expected to participate fully in the Guild’s charitable activities and spiritual and social events.

The Merseyside branch of the Guild has been reinvigorated and the Chief Constable has agreed that it be recognised as a staff support network along with the others.  Myself and a departmental colleague of mine are actively seeking new members and arranging events.  We are honoured to host the annual mass for the NW forces to celebrate the feast of St Michael, the patron saint of the police service, which will be held at Police Headquarters on Friday 29 September 2017 and at which the Chief Constable will be present.  A buffet will also be served after the Mass which will give the chance to those attending to socialise.

If anyone can attend please email me – paul.connolly@merseyside.police.uk
or my colleague D/Con James Milligan – james.t.milligan@merseyside.police.uk

The Personal Support Unit (PSU)

The Personal Support Unit (PSU)

One of your NARPO members, Mr Graham Barlow (Oldham Branch), is a volunteer with PSU.  He suggested I write to NARPO to see if other retired officers might be interested in volunteering with PSU in Liverpool.

PSU is a national charity that supports Litigants in Person at the Civil and Family Courts.  Specific knowledge of civil and family law is not necessary but good people skills are as is a general awareness of the court environment.  Volunteers might offer a range of support, but not Legal Advice.  Often, we give legal information and common-sense advice, or help with forms and statements.  Graham is a real asset to Liverpool and I am sure your members would bring much experience to the volunteer role.

If you would be willing to advertise this volunteering opportunity I would be very grateful.  Our volunteers include, retired people including former Magistrates, Probation officers, Social Workers, Teachers, Housing directors and business people – not forgetting Graham as a retired Police Officer.

If you referred your members to the PSU web site www.thepsu.org.uk that would give all the information of what we do and a means of enquiring further. Volunteering opportunities exist in Liverpool and Chester.

I do hope you can help

North West Police Benevolent Fund
Donations – Retired Officers

Are you a Member?

From September 2017, donations for retired officers will increase to £5 but, with tax relief, that amount is £4 for 20% tax payers and £3 for 40% taxpayers, providing it is deducted from pension.

Historically, new members to the NWPBF would have to wait 12 months to reap the treatment benefits of North West Police Benevolent Fund but if you join between now and 1st September this year, you will be able to access treatment services following the first payment.

If you are not already a member and wish to subscribe, please complete the attached application form and send it to:

Help Required

Mike Bramwell will shortly be attending Clatterbridge Hospital for treatment and he was wondering if any member could help him out with transport.  His family will be providing the transport on most days but he would be grateful if a member could provide transport on the odd day or so.  Mike lives in Halewood and if you feel you could help, please contact the Branch Secretary.
